Test method

Modal test & modal analysis

Make natural frequencies visible.

What is it about?

The method in one sentence.

The modal test determines natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes of a structure. In machinery, automotive and aerospace, it is a key tool to ensure the integrity, safety and performance of parts.

SonicTC FRF test: frequency response function with pronounced resonance peaks, coherence and phase plots, plus a table of natural frequencies with damping values

How does it work?

The part or structure is excited by a manual or automatic modal hammer or shaker. SonicTC captures the response, computes the frequency response function (FRF) and identifies modal parameters – in the frequency or time domain. SISO and SIMO test configurations are supported; coherence indicates the quality of the averaged FRF, while the H1, H2 and Hv estimators account for measurement noise.

Typical applications

  • Natural frequency identification on bodies, blades, bridges
  • Correlation: experiment vs. FEM simulation
  • Damping analysis through decay behaviour after impulse
  • SISO and SIMO setups with H1/H2/Hv estimators
  • Building acoustics and structural dynamics in R&D
  • Damping analysis via logarithmic decrement and iterative circle fit
